hi forum!
i need some help with my jazz bass. I took it to my music shop to get new strings and a bridge adjustment. It was fine for about a week then the strings started to feel old again. Also i get a lot of fret buzz especially on the fifth fret. I thought about just getting the tools to adjust the bridge so i could do it myself. Any idea where i could get them? Also i use a low tuning which probably doesn't help a lot (c sharp, g sharp, c sharp, f sharp) its like D tuning but an extra half step down. Are there any special strings i could use to counter the loose feeling? thank |

Yeah, the low tuning is definitely going to lower your action. Because chances are the shop would've set it up for standard tuning, so when you downtune, it would naturally lower the tension and thus make it easier to get the fret buzz. One good thing to do, is buy Heavy Gauge strings. They are best for when you downtune, because they do a good job at keeping the tension. Also, definitely make sure that your neck is bowed right (truss rod adjustment) and that the bridge is high enough. Usually both require just an allen/hex wrench...some require screwdrivers, or both. You should be able to find the hex/allen wrenches at almost any home improvement or automotive shop or even at places like Walmart.

Also make sure that the Nut isn't to low either...it shouldn't be, really but make sure that everything is right up on the neck side of the fretboard too.
Also, where are you placing your fingers at the 5th fret? Finger position has a great deal of impact on buzz especially in lower tunings. -------------------- AIM: skatebylife
